Summer Excursions!
In June John and I went back to visit my parents, kayak the San Juans and camp on the Oregon coastline. It was an awesome trip, although we arrived home V-E-R-Y stinky and ready to shower and drop into bed for 4 days of sleep!

While we were in Moses Lake, it was RASPBERRY season and so my mom had tons of freshly picked raspberries every morning. She made a yummy yummy raspberry pie...
and that was when I learned how much John loves raspberries. Like, I think heaven for him would be raspberry patches that he could roll around in and love and eat. endlessly.
After a relaxing stay at the 'ol parents house, we headed up to Friday Harbor, in the San Juan Islands.
We went sea-kayaking for 3 days, camping on Stuart Island. We slept on a little isolated pennisula and woke up with Bald Eagles hanging out on the trees above us and Harbor Seals basking in the sun on the rocks closeby. Here was our campsite...
When we weren't sea kayaking we entertained ourselves with rock-skipping contests... John always wins
And... why is it that boys always want to poke things with a stick?
this is a lion's mane jelly fish, it is poisenous and it was dead, or at least it was after John poked it with a stick. Just kidding, it was dead before. :)
On our last day we did see some Orca whales off in the distance, so we set off on a crazy sprint to try and get ahead of them. There were about 12 or 13 of them and the closest we got was about 500 feet away. It was a highlight of the trip as we watched them mosy along the coastline looking for some tasty salmon!
Before and after our trip we stayed at the COOLEST hostel on San Juan Island! It is called Wayfarers Rest and we stayed in a little cabin in the backyard. It was called the boat house and you can see why! The owner sawed his old boat in half and attached it to the little cabin bedroom. It was such a unique and fun place to sleep!
We truly lucked out with the weather, on our ferry ride we were treated to gorgeous views of Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier.
After we left the San Juans we made our way down to Oregon along highway 101. It was a beautiful drive with majestic views of the coastline.
We stopped in Astoria and got the map for the "Goonies" tour, we stopped and took video of each movie site with John re-enacting several key points of movie action. :) We found a terrific campsite right on the beach for a couple of days where we chilled out before making a mad road trip dash back to Salt Lake.
And our last morning in Oregon we were headed home and I looked out to the ocean and saw.... a baby grey whale! It was about 15 feet long just moving its way down the coastline. He was just about 50 feet from the coast. We followed and watched him for a ways. It was the perfect last memory of a great trip!
